The San Diego Padres have been bringing outstanding Major League Baseball to Southern California since 1969. Perennial contenders in the elite National League West, they have the distinction of being one of the two teams that actually began life in California. (The other is the Los Angeles Angels.)
The Padres play their home games at the stunning Petco Park, a baseball-only stadium in downtown San Diego that was built in 2004. The team has been affiliated with several Hall of Fame players over the years, but the two most associated with the Padres are Tony Gwynn and Dave Winfield. Gwynn, who proudly played his entire career with San Diego, still holds most of the team’s offensive career records, including an astounding lifetime batting average of .338.
